How to Start Horseback Archery Without Owning a Horse

A lot of people assume you need your own horse before starting horseback archery.

You don’t.

And honestly, starting completely alone is usually much harder anyway.

Mounted archery combines several different skills at the same time:

Riding.

Archery.

Balance.

Timing.

Horse handling.

Body control.

And for beginners, trying to figure out all of that alone through random internet videos can become frustrating very quickly.

That’s why learning from experienced coaches and trained horses makes such a big difference.

A good course environment allows beginners to focus on learning the actual skills instead of constantly guessing:

  • what equipment to use

  • how to hold the bow

  • how to train safely

  • how to work with horses

  • what mistakes to avoid

  • how to progress step by step

Well-trained horses also matter much more than people realize.

A beginner learning on calm, experienced horses will usually progress faster and more safely than someone trying to figure everything out alone with unsuitable setups.

And even if you cannot attend in-person training immediately, structured online learning is still very different from randomly collecting information from social media or YouTube.

Good online courses explain:

  • why things are done a certain way

  • how skills connect together

  • common mistakes

  • training progressions

  • horse considerations

  • technique details beginners often miss

That creates a much clearer starting point.

Many people think they need to “already know something” before starting mounted archery.

But learning properly from the beginning is usually far easier than trying to fix bad habits later.

You do not need to own a horse before starting.

You just need a good learning environment.
