What Bow Length Works Best for Horseback Archery?

One of the most common beginner questions in horseback archery is:

“What bow length should I use?”

And honestly, there is no single perfect answer for everyone.

Bow length depends on several things:

  • your draw length

  • shooting style

  • experience level

  • horse movement

  • personal preference

  • the type of mounted archery you train

A shorter bow is usually easier to handle on horseback.

It moves more easily around the horse.

It is often faster to maneuver during quick shots and changing positions.

That’s one reason many mounted archery bows are relatively compact compared to target archery equipment.

But shorter is not automatically better.

If a bow is too short for the archer’s draw length, shooting can start feeling uncomfortable or inconsistent, and lead to injuries.

Especially for beginners.

Many new archers also assume they need an extremely short and aggressive bow immediately because it “looks more advanced.”

In reality, a slightly more forgiving setup is often much easier to learn with.

Comfort and consistency matter far more than looking fast.

Another important thing is that horseback archery includes many different styles.

Some prefer shorter and faster bows.

Others prefer smoother draws and more stable feeling setups.

There is no universal “best bow” that works perfectly for everyone.

That’s why trying equipment — or learning from experienced coaches — usually helps much more than randomly buying equipment online based only on appearance.

A good beginner setup should feel:

  • manageable

  • repeatable

  • comfortable

  • controllable

Especially under movement and pressure.

In the beginning, technique matters much more than having the “perfect” bow anyway.
