Why Your Arrows Keep Going Left or Right

One of the most frustrating problems in archery is when arrows consistently drift left or right.
Especially when it keeps happening even though you feel like you are aiming correctly.
A lot of beginners immediately assume the problem is the bow.
Sometimes it is.
But very often, the real cause is technique inconsistency.
Small changes in:
release
hand position
shoulder alignment
grip tension
posture
timing
can move arrows surprisingly far sideways.
And because these changes are often tiny, archers may not even notice them happening.
One very common issue is grip tension.
If the bow hand twists or tightens differently between shots, arrow direction changes immediately.
Another common problem is collapsing during the release.
The shot may feel correct, but body alignment changes at the last moment.
In horseback archery, balance and timing also affect left-right consistency heavily.
Especially while moving.
Even slight body rotation changes can influence arrow direction.
Equipment can matter too, of course.
Incorrect spine.
Poorly matched arrows.
Bow tuning issues.
But many archers start changing equipment before checking technique properly first.
That often creates even more confusion.
Video analysis helps a lot here.
Many problems become obvious immediately once you can actually see your movement patterns shot by shot.
And usually, consistency improves faster when archers focus less on “forcing accuracy” and more on building repeatable movement.
Because most left-right problems are not random.
They are repeated patterns.
