Common Beginner Mistakes in Archery (And How to Avoid Them)

Most beginners don’t struggle because archery is difficult.

They struggle because they repeat the same avoidable mistakes.

1. Starting with too much draw weight

This is the most common issue.

Too heavy → compensation → bad habits

Start lighter than you think.

2. Shooting too much, too soon

More arrows ≠ faster progress

Fatigue reduces quality — and quality is what builds skill.

3. Changing everything at once

If something feels off, beginners often:

  • adjust stance

  • adjust grip

  • adjust anchor

All at once.

Result: no clear feedback. You need to focus to fix one problem at a time.

4. No clear focus

Going to shoot without a goal leads to random practice.

Every session should have one focus.

5. Not tracking progress

Without tracking:

  • you forget what worked

  • you repeat mistakes

  • you lose consistency
